  1. Calgary Blue:
Well for one, I can hardly wait for next week and all the more so because over on this side of the pond, we now get to see more footy than ever before. NBC have bought the rights and will screen every game, every week, in the Prem. Each week, we can pick the game we want to watch, so unless I’m travelling I can see every City game – no more streaming for me. It’s pretty cool. There has to be an upside to living over here!

Oh you mean other than the squillion megabux they pay you old bean ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

  3. Valentino Azzurro: All-in-all I’m very excited about Pellers’ promise to play exciting football – cynical ole me almost believes him.

Well, he’s publicly annouced that he thinks our squad is the strongest… so he’s made a rod for his own back if we don’t look good. Frankly I find it a refreshing change of mindset from Mancini saying how Utd were better.
It’s rather up to the squad to put all this positivty into practice… should be fun.

  4. I ‘m sharing this short clip of Valers and the (no longer dark) lady of his dreams, the lovely Mrs Valers, entertaining the Saintly and me when they visited us recently, matron kindly vidjoed it for us.

  5. A lot of good analysis here and I’m in agreement with most of it..
    RE Slasher’s Q’s:
    1) Rooney to Chelsea, no chance. I think this was just a monster wind-up by José, to see if Gollum’s bottle has a leaky cork. If he goes, I think he will go abroad, probably Italy.

    2) I don’t think Suarez will go to Arsenal. My instinct is that there is a compromise coming up; while he may well go (abroad) next season I think ‘Ginger’ Rodgers knows that, when it comes to scoring, the little evil gobbing git is his Fred Astaire and Studge can’t do it on his own. Also I don’t think the potential deal is particularly Wenger-driven, more a case of ‘We really ought to make the gesture and buy somebody’ so while the Prof might go along with it there will be no rapid upping of the ante.

    3) Re Bale, I think this move may happen. Even stingy Levy must get pragmatic at some point and say “enough, already, we’ll take the bunce”. It won’t spring open the purse particularly, (a) because from what I’ve heard Real want to pay on the drip and (b) Spurs no longer have the charisma or the cred to attract top players, years of under-achieving have seen to that.

    4) Re City, the strength of the City squad, as Bellers has sussed, is phenomenal. Properly managed and with that modicum of luck every side needs, we could storm the Prem. As it is, I’d agree with Alph and make Chelsea slight favourites. While the defence should still creak, the Oscar/Hazard/Ba/Mata/backed up by a rejuvenated Torres and an emergent Lukaku is pretty potent, more so if he moves Sideshow Bob into midfield; the Maureen factor should be worth a few points. Arsenal seem in good shape but they are proficient rather than dangerous – we’ll know more after the weekend. The Rags are, as Alph says, ‘where they were last year’ only with a totally demotivated Shrek. Experienced, tough, lucky, brilliant at grinding out wins against poor opposition, great team ethic but the quality in depth is not there. A run of injuries early on could see them stuffed. And nobody is afraid of Golum, not even the referees. Only two of their First X1 I’d have in ours – Van Pervy and Vidic. I don’t fear the Dippers – although, strangely enough, they seem to reserve their best football for when they play against us (cf Chelsea). I wouldn’t be in the least surprised to see Swansea, with Laudrup at the helm, give them a tussle for 6th place. On that topic, it’s funny that neither Laudrup nor Rodgers has made any sort of move for Sinkers. Clearly the former doesn’t rate him but you’d have thought Rodgers would.
Re the rest, Everton under Martinez could be interesting. I hope they hang on to Baines and Fellatio. Fulham are dark horses, I think they could finish 7th-9th.
Looks like the Barcodes are in for another year of chaos, the more so with JFK at the controls. They could easily go down. In contrast, Mean Mr.Mussolini could turn Sunderland into the next Stoke – the team nobody wants to play.
The promoted clubs will all struggle, methinks. I’d like to see Ollie’s lot stay up, the Prem was a sunnier place when he was there.

Anyhow, when push comes to shove The HEAD says: 1 Chelsea 2 City 3 Arsenal 4 Rags 5 Spuds 6 Dippers 7 Everton 8 Swansea
Whereas the HEART says 1. City 2 Arsenal 3 Everton 4 Swansea 5 Chelsea 6 Spuds 7 Dippers 8 Rags

All-in-all I’m very excited about Pellers’ promise to play exciting football – cynical ole me almost believes him. Chic

  6. Alph. re Chelsea. They will be up there but better than City ? I don’t see that happening unless Mourinho does a much better job than Pellegrini.
They have Lukaku and De Brun? (something like that) back who both look good. I don’t know much about Schurrle, which would indicate he’s no world beater.
Im not sure that’s enough to close the gap on us, we looked very comfortable against them last season, as someone wrote , we beat them so often we should own them by now.
They look good enough going forward but creaked a bit when we pushed them back, they haven’t improved that defence yet.
They have Mata, Hazard and Oscar still as their main threats but they barely troubled us last season.
I suppose a lot will depend not on the games against the top sides, which we should get the better of, but the points gained against the lesser ones, which is where we struggled last time.
Hopefully the new attack minded policy will see an end to that situation.
If we get it right and if we perform to the standard we are capable of on a regular basis, we might have daylight at the top of the table.
Proviso… The window is still open, the balance of strengths of the squads could change radically before it closes and any player at any team could miss the whole season through injury.
Right now, as things stand, i’d say we are sitting pretty.

  7. DEPRECIATION STRIKES AGAIN!

What a difference a couple of hours makes. Come Sunday Rooney will be sold to Arsenal for a bag of frozen peas + 500 Green Shield stamps.

  8. bell boy: I will also have to sit on the fence about City. The new faces have the potential to make us stronger and the new manager the potential to make it work. That doesn’t mean we will be stronger but we certainly could be.
Utd must look at our squad and shudder. Man for man it’s no contest in terms of ability.
They have to rely on the team ethic, self belief and the systems built up under Fergie. Will that still be there and will it be enough. I can’t see many Rags making our squad let alone our first 11 now.
    How times have changed.

Good post bellers, that is a fair analysis.

Just to while away some time before the Big K.O. what are your opinions on these 4 questions.:
    1) .Do you think Rooney will leave the rags for Chelsea.?
2)Do you think Suarez will go to Arsenal?.
    3) .Do you think Bale will go to Real Madrid.?
    4) .Do you think City have a stronger squad now than in 2011/12 considering we have lost De Jong , Balloteli and Tevez.
I may have missed someone else but I cannot recall.– oh ! just thought – Johnson.

    Good questions Slasher

No – Under no circumstances will the Rags sell the Grannie Banger to Sibneft, it would be the kiss of death on their title chances and Gollum has too much hanging on being seen to be as tough and uncompromising as his weegie mentor. If the relationship really stumbles and the Shrek Family Senior Brain cell fancies a sojourn in Italy or up Spain who knows. That might happen if Gollum is gift wrapped a major signing/

No – it was different with Torres to CFC, Pool had already given up on his ability to deliver and the £50m was supposed to rebuild the squad but got My Little Donkey and the Overbite Kid instead. If he goes and it makes sense to sell him, it will be somewhere abroad like Anzi Mach where they cut your balls off and feed them to you if you don’t behave. Whatever they do they will still struggle down in the upper mid table.

Yes: Levy is no fool, Bale is good but he hasn’t the technical ability of Ronaldo and may never have another season quite as good as the last. Daniel Levy will try to screw the last euro, and fair does to him, we should try a bit harder in that area of business, but in the end he knows you can’t keep an unhappy player and it’s too much cash for a small club (comparatively) to walk away from. They’ve spent £51m this summer (£36m net) which was more or less covered by the Modric transfer and could get another couple of top class players and still have money in the kitty for the future. If they ever want to step up and replace the Arse they need perhaps to take what might appear to be one step back first.

Yes; Undoubtedly. The Rags have the advantage of a settled side but have a disaffected Shrek and no fresh quality yet and unless something radical happens like Ronaldo returning, I think they will fall short. The home derby will be a telling measure, it has to be a ‘No Fear’ approach. Sibneft look marginal favourites to me. They are settled, their front 4 are entering their second season together, Torres is finding a new method, Ba runs in straight lines better than most and Lukaku looks the real deal if still a bit raw. David Luiz has obvious quality but he isn’t a ‘Mourinho’ CH by a long chalk nor is he a Mourinho style of midfielder. I think Mourinho would like to sell him and get someone like Pepe instead. he’s already brought back the aging Percy from RM.

As it stands if the transfer window closed now, I’d have CFC as very marginal favourites with the Rags 3rd and the Arse and Spuds fighting it out for 4th and the Scousers struggling to keep ahead of the rest. It will be interesting to see how Martinez manages with the better players and resources he has at Everton; will he be able to keep them ahead of Liverpool?

  10. Not sure if any of those specific moves will take place but if Roon and Suarez are forced to stay put, the odds must be fairly good that they will not give their best. Of course, they could move somewhere else.
Bale move is starting to look less likely, he may be the type to just get on with things regardless.
It depends if his agent sees this as the chance of a lifetime. A bad season or injury could see Bale fall off the radar of the biggest clubs.

I will also have to sit on the fence about City. The new faces have the potential to make us stronger and the new manager the potential to make it work. That doesn’t mean we will be stronger but we certainly could be.

    1) Nope. Don’t think Gollum will let him go nor do I think The Special One wants him.
    2) Nope. Arsend is too stubborn to pay what Rogers wants for him.
    3) Nope. Levy is a tough guy to negotiate with and Madrid will walk away.
    4) Without question, yes.
